April 2, 2002: Origins of the Project
I was spending my afternoon at work casually surfing around Anandtech Hot Deals forum, when this stupid thread about a 100" TV FOR $20 caught my eye. I was skeptical, and started to learn more about it.
Basically, the $20 was for a fresnel lens and some plans to build a box to put your plain old TV in. The fresnel lens, when placed in front of the TV, projected the TV light source onto a wall. Everyone I talk to about this says it is unbelievably dim, and only works in pitch black conditions.
After I learn a little about this, I start to get excited about possibilities of a huge-screen in my house for little money, so, I start searching around the net for a better way to do this 100" TV stuff. I bump into a lot of sites saying that its hopeless. Then, I bump into another site -- a site with a link to a forum that I have since been an extremely active member, following its every move.
That site is DIYAUDIO.COM's Video forum. The link is
here. Theres a long-running thread with over 1600 replies now called "
DIY Video Projector"
